Free Parking in Worcester: Everything You Need to Know Before You Visit
Sorting out parking before a trip is one of those things that sounds simple but somehow manages to eat up twenty minutes of your morning. So let's make this easy. Whether you're visiting Worcester for the day, arriving late after a long drive, or staying for a few nights, here's everything you actually need to know — including a couple of spots that most visitors never find.

Is Free Parking Available in Worcester City Centre?
Yes — but you need to know where to look. Worcester's city centre is deliberately designed to encourage walking over driving, so genuinely free and central parking is limited. That doesn't mean it's impossible, though. With a little local knowledge, you can park well without spending a fortune.
Here are the best options, depending on when you're arriving.
Council Car Parks: Free After 9pm
This is the one most visitors don't know about. All Worcester City Council car parks are free between 9pm and 7am — which makes them genuinely brilliant if you're heading in for dinner, an evening out, or arriving after a long journey.
The main ones to know:
| Number | First Name | Last Name | Email Address |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Anne | Evans | anne.evans@mail.com |
| 2 | Bill | Fernandez | bill.fernandez@mail.com |
| 3 | Candice | Gates | candice.gates@mail.com |
| 4 | Dave | Hill | dave.hill@mail.com |
All of these are well-placed for walking into the city centre, and several are open 24 hours. During the day, charges at the more central ones start from around £2.20 for two hours — still very reasonable for a city centre.
On Sundays, normal daytime charges apply, with the free window starting from 9pm as usual.
Tip: Always check the signs when you arrive. Charges and times can change, and it's better to spend ten seconds looking than come back to a ticket.
The Hidden Gem: Waterworks Road Car Park (Completely Free)
If you want parking that's free at any time of day, no evening restrictions and no time limits to keep one eye on, then Waterworks Road Car Park (WR1 3EZ) is the one to bookmark right now.
It has 37 free spaces managed by Worcester City Council, and it sits alongside Gheluvelt Park, Pitchcroft, and the River Severn. Yes, it's a short walk into the city centre — but it's a genuinely lovely walk along the riverside, and most people who use it say it's one of their favourite parts of the visit.
This is a real local secret. Most visitors drive straight past it.

On-Street Parking in Worcester
On-street parking in bays near the city centre follows the same pattern: free between 9pm and 7am, with daytime rates running at around 60p per hour — which is cheap by any city standard.
Before you set off, it's worth downloading the RingGo app. Several of Worcester's car parks are now pay-by-app only, and having it sorted in advance saves a lot of faff when you arrive.
Free Parking a Short Walk Away: Residential Streets
If you don't mind a ten or fifteen minute walk, you can often find free on-street parking in residential streets south and east of the city centre. Streets near White Ladies Walk are a reliable option and popular with regular visitors.
As always: check for any restriction signs before you walk away. Parking rules in residential areas can be easy to miss, and it's not worth the risk.
Charging Your Electric Car in Worcester
Worcester has invested seriously in EV infrastructure over the last couple of years, and it shows.
Best City Centre Option: St Martin's Gate Car Park (WR1 2BS)
This is the go-to for most EV drivers visiting Worcester. It has twelve charge points including six 50kW rapid chargers, all listed on Zap-Map and priced at 25p per kWh. Even if you're in a hurry, a rapid charger here will give you a useful top-up in the time it takes to walk into town and grab a coffee.
If St Martin's Gate is busy, King Street Car Park (four fast chargers) and Tallow Hill Car Park (twelve charge points at 45p per kWh) are both solid alternatives.
All charge points across Worcester's council car parks run on green electricity from renewable sources — a small but nice touch.
Staying in St John's? You're in Luck
The University of Worcester Arena (Chequers Lane, WR2 5JN) has one of the best public EV charging setups in the whole region. We're talking four 50kW rapid chargers, nine 22kW dual AC posts, and eighteen 7kW dual AC posts — all around the edge of the car park. It's operated by Swarco E.Connect, open to the public, and the sheer number of points means you're very unlikely to arrive and find everything taken.
There are also BP Pulse charge points on the main St John's Campus at Henwick Grove, giving you a backup if the Arena is unusually busy.
One detail worth knowing: residents within a kilometre of council EV chargers can apply for a permit giving free parking overnight while their vehicle charges. More relevant for locals, but it signals how seriously Worcester is taking its EV infrastructure.
For live availability across every charging point in the city, Zap-Map is your best tool — especially useful for checking before you leave rather than on arrival.
Blue Badge Holders
Blue badge holders can park free for up to three hours in all Worcester City Council car parks, as long as your time clock is correctly displayed on arrival. The charging points at St Martin's Gate are designed to accommodate the majority of electric vehicles currently available, so EV drivers with blue badges should find themselves well catered for.

A Few Things to Sort Before You Leave Home
Download RingGo — several car parks are pay-by-app only now, and it accepts all major payment cards.
Check your vehicle height — all council car parks have a 2.2 metre height restriction, so larger vans or high-roof vehicles will need to plan accordingly.
Busy days fill up fast — if you're visiting during a farmers' market, festival, or race day at Worcester Racecourse, it's genuinely worth pre-booking through an app like JustPark. Independent car parks often come in at £3–5 for the day, and the peace of mind is worth it.
Ready to Explore?
Once parking is sorted, Worcester really does reward the effort. The cathedral, The Commandery, a walk along the Severn, and some brilliant independent restaurants and shops are all within easy reach of the car parks above.
